I LOVE (and I don't oft use call capitals to emphasize anything) this article. I'm obsessed with Tolkien as a man, author and worldbuilder. He's been such an influence in my life and this article hits on so many levels to me personally. Well done!

Immortality is quite hard to relate to.

Tolkien made Elves more relatable by establishing another type of limit to their earthly existence — "fading":

"Eventually, all Elves that remain in Middle-earth undergo a process of "fading", in which their immortal spirits overwhelm and "consume" their bodies. This renders their bodily forms invisible to mortal eyes, except to those to whom they wish to manifest themselves."

Dying and fading are not so different, I dare to say.

It is said that some human souls also linger on earth after dying.
